IGP Disu Proposes Dedicated Security Desk To Protect Nigeria’s Creative Economy
Nigeria’s growing creative economy requires stronger security and intellectual property protection if it is to deliver its full potential for jobs, investment and innovation, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has said.
Disu made the submission on Wednesday while delivering a lecture to participants of Senior Executive Course 48, 2026, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.
Speaking on “The Orange Economy and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Role of the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP proposed the establishment of an Orange Economy Security and Intellectual Property Coordination Desk within an existing structure of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the proposed desk would strengthen specialised policing, inter-agency cooperation, reporting mechanisms and engagement with stakeholders in the creative sector.
Disu identified organised piracy, counterfeiting, cyber-enabled fraud and other crimes as threats capable of weakening creative businesses and discouraging investment.
He also called for stronger collaboration between the Police, Nigerian Copyright Commission and other relevant agencies to protect intellectual property and creative assets.
The IGP further advocated financial investigations, where appropriate, to trace criminal proceeds channelled through payment accounts, digital wallets, advertising revenues, logistics networks and online distribution platforms.
He said protecting legitimate economic opportunities for young Nigerians could also help reduce vulnerability to criminal activity, stressing that effective policing must safeguard both public safety and the rights that allow creativity and enterprise to thrive.
