NUJ, IOM Sign MoU To Strengthen Responsible Migration Reporting

The media’s role in migration is increasingly moving beyond reporting events to helping people distinguish safe migration from exploitation.
A new partnership between the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) seeks to strengthen that role.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote accurate migration reporting, media advocacy and professional capacity building.
The agreement, signed in Abuja, is designed to equip journalists with better knowledge and skills to report migration issues responsibly, while helping the public access reliable information and recognise the risks of unsafe migration.
NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, said the partnership would create opportunities for journalists across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to deepen their understanding of migration, including its opportunities, challenges and early warning signs.
He also identified misinformation, malnutrition and drug abuse among issues requiring greater media attention.
IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, Sharon Dimanche, described journalists as key partners in shaping public understanding of migration.
She stressed the importance of balanced reporting in countering misinformation and protecting potential migrants from sophisticated scams perpetrated through online and social media platforms.
The partnership will cover media advocacy, communication, capacity building and reporting on safe migration, migrants’ health, emergency situations, durable solutions and the impact of migration on communities.
The MoU provides a framework for sustained cooperation between the two organisations towards more informed and impactful migration journalism in Nigeria.
