Nigeria, US Deepen Strategic Ties Ahead Of Washington Talks
Nigeria and the United States are moving to strengthen their strategic partnership as evolving security threats and economic challenges increase the need for deeper cooperation between both countries.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, reaffirmed the commitment on Monday during talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, maritime security and regional stability, ahead of another bilateral engagement scheduled for Washington DC in August 2026.
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria remained committed to tackling security challenges through stronger law enforcement, prosecution of terrorism-related offences, protection of vulnerable communities and sustained efforts to secure the Gulf of Guinea and Lake Chad Basin.
He also rejected attempts to portray Nigeria’s security challenges as religious persecution or genocide, insisting that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Garcia described Nigeria as one of America’s most important strategic partners in Africa, citing growing cooperation in trade, health, technology, maritime security and counter-terrorism.
Both countries agreed to sustain high-level consultations, deepen people-to-people exchanges and resolve outstanding issues through constructive dialogue.
