Data Revolution For Inclusion: ECOWAS Moves To End ‘Invisible’ Disability Gap In West Africa

In a region where millions of persons with disabilities remain statistically unseen, the ECOWAS Commission has taken a decisive step to change the narrative through a bold, data-driven approach to inclusion.

At a high-level validation meeting held in Abuja on 14 April 2026, the Commission advanced its Regional Disability Data Accountability Framework, an initiative aimed at closing persistent gaps in reliable and harmonised disability data across Member States.

Anchored in the ECOWAS Disability Action Plan (2020–2030), the framework aligns with continental and global commitments to inclusive development.

It underscores a strategic shift towards evidence-based policymaking, ensuring that persons with disabilities are no longer excluded from national and regional development planning.

The process brought together Member States, regional institutions and development partners to strengthen national data systems, improve cross-country comparability, and support more targeted policies.

Stakeholders say the framework will enhance resource allocation and promote inclusive service delivery in critical sectors such as education, healthcare and social protection.

By making disability data more visible and actionable, ECOWAS aims to foster equitable growth, deepen social cohesion and accelerate sustainable development across West Africa.
