Lassa Fever Death Rate Rises In Nigeria Despite Drop In New Cases – NCDC
Even as new infections show signs of decline, Nigeria’s battle with Lassa fever is taking a deadlier turn.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a slight drop in confirmed cases, from 26 in week 13 to 22 in week 14 (30 March, 5 April 2026), but warned of a worrying increase in fatalities.
According to the latest situation report, the country has recorded 170 deaths so far in 2026, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 24.8 per cent, significantly higher than the 18.8 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.
The 22 new infections were reported across eight states, including Edo, Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Kogi, Plateau, Ebonyi and Benue, while 22 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 94 local government areas.
Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo account for 84 per cent of all confirmed cases.
Health authorities also noted that young adults aged 21 to 30 remain the most affected group, with one additional healthcare worker infected during the reporting period.
The NCDC has urged continued vigilance, early reporting, and adherence to preventive measures as efforts intensify to curb the spread of the disease nationwide.
