Tinubu Signs 2026 Electoral Act, Resets Rules Of The Game Ahead Of 2027 Polls
In Nigeria’s high-stakes electoral season, the laws that govern the ballot can shape not just outcomes but public trust.
That trust took centre stage on Tuesday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law, formally repealing the Electoral Act 2022 and setting a new legal framework for the 2027 general elections.
The President assented to the amended legislation in the presence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, following the harmonisation of the bill by both chambers of the National Assembly earlier in the week.
The final passage, however, was not without controversy, as minority lawmakers raised objections during deliberations.
With presidential assent secured, the new law replaces the 2022 Act and re-enacts the Electoral Act 2026, introducing fresh provisions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework and addressing long-standing contentious issues ahead of the next election cycle.
While full details of the amendments are expected to be rolled out, the development signals a renewed push to refine the rules governing party primaries, campaigns and election-day processes.
The signing marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing electoral reforms, coming at a time when political parties, election managers and voters are beginning preparations for 2027.
Stakeholders are now watching closely to see whether the new framework will translate into a more credible, transparent and dispute-free electoral process.
