NUJ Urges Lawmakers To Lock In Tech-Driven Result Transmission Ahead Of 2027 Polls

As Nigeria fine-tunes its electoral laws for the next general elections, the credibility of how results move from polling units is once again in the spotlight, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) says the stakes could not be higher.

In a media release signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ stated ambiguity around the handling and movement of election results risks eroding public trust and fuelling political tension.

The Union urged lawmakers to prioritise clear, enforceable rules that guarantee openness and verifiability in the electoral process ahead of 2027.

The NUJ noted that citizens have consistently demanded reforms that strengthen transparency, adding that modern democracies increasingly rely on digital tools to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot.

According to the Union, technology-driven, real-time transmission of results from polling units to designated collation platforms would reduce suspicion, curb post-election disputes and enhance institutional credibility.

As legislative consultations progress, the NUJ called on all stakeholders to act in the national interest by institutionalising technology-supported result management frameworks that promote transparency, accountability and public confidence.

The Union emphasised that aligning Nigeria’s electoral reforms with global best practices will deepen democratic culture and contribute to peaceful polls in 2027.
