Kebbi Crisis: EU Releases €225,000 Aid For 7,700 Displaced People
For thousands of families forced from their homes by violence in Kebbi State, help is coming in the form of cash support and protection services as the European Union releases €225,000 (about ₦340 million) in emergency humanitarian assistance.
The six-month intervention, to be implemented by the Nigerian Red Cross, is expected to support about 7,700 conflict-displaced people living across settlements and host communities in the north-western state.
The assistance will prioritise the most vulnerable, including female-headed households, persons with disabilities, elderly people and those facing acute protection risks.
The EU said the funding will provide multipurpose cash assistance to help families meet their most urgent needs, alongside protection services and monitoring of population movements.
The intervention comes as insecurity worsens across seven Local Government Areas of Kebbi State.
According to the EU, more than 16,600 people have been affected, with 7,706 displaced and 108 injured, following an escalation of armed attacks and communal violence.
The latest surge in violence around 31 August 2026 triggered the current humanitarian response.
Displaced families in temporary settlements and host communities are facing urgent needs for shelter, food, clean water, healthcare and protection.
The EU funding forms part of its contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
