Prayer Summit In Aguleri Rallies Christians To Fund ₦500m Ecumenical Cathedral For Igbo Restoration
At a time when faith communities are searching for unity amid social tension, Christian leaders in Anambra have renewed a bold call for one Church in purpose, if not in name.
The 2025 Planning Committee of the World Christian International Ecumenical Centre used the four-day Prayer Summit in Aguleri, Anambra State, to mobilise support for projects aimed at unifying Christendom and uplifting the most vulnerable.
The annual summit, now in its fifth edition, was first launched under the chairmanship of the former Bishop of Mbamili Diocese, the Right Rev. Henry Okeke, with the Anambra State Government then under Governor Peter Obi, represented.
Speaking at the gathering, the committee said the essence of the summit is to pray for the liberation, emancipation and total divine restoration of Ndigbo, as well as for the global unification of all true believers in God.
The prayers also focused on divine intervention in recent developments across Igbo land.
The Ecumenical Centre outlined key projects, including the construction of a cathedral for Christian unification, a school for the poor and a shelter for persons with disabilities.
However, the organisers lamented that progress has been slowed by funding constraints, stressing that the vision remains alive.
“We are fulfilling God’s mandate that we should be one, for there is no church in heaven,” the committee said, adding that segregation and discrimination among Christians have undermined the Church’s witness.
To address infrastructure needs, the centre disclosed that over ₦500 million is required to build a permanent hall at the Aguleri site.
Participants were urged to support the vision through donations to the Anambra Ecumenical Centre’s account with First Bank.
The organisers expressed confidence that sustained unity and sacrifice would translate prayers into lasting impact for the Igbo people and the wider Christian community.
