Heavy Security On Keffi-Abuja Expressway As Soldiers Move To Avert Free Nnamdi Kanu Protest
Increased security tension gripped Abuja on Monday as military officers barricaded the Keffi–Abuja Expressway, leaving thousands of commuters stranded for hours.
The operation, which began around 4 a.m., was part of efforts to prevent protesters from entering the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to participate in the planned Free Nnamdi Kanu demonstration.
Soldiers were seen conducting intensive stop-and-search checks at Karu Bridge, before the Sani Abacha Barracks, causing a long traffic snarl that stretched for kilometres.
The gridlock left civil servants and traders who commute daily from Nyanya, Karu, Mararaba, and Masaka to the city centre stuck and frustrated.
The development coincides with reports of separate protest actions led by activist Omoyele Sowore in other parts of Abuja, where tear gas was allegedly used by security agents to disperse demonstrators.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid non-essential movement and work remotely where possible, citing safety concerns.
The situation remains tense as security agencies continue to monitor and control access into the capital city.
