Enugu Air Takes Off: Mbah Launches State-Owned Airline To Boost Economy, Unite Region

Enugu State has made history with the official launch of Enugu Air, a state-owned airline unveiled by Governor Peter Mbah at Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The move marks a bold step towards economic transformation, regional integration, and global connectivity.
The maiden flight of three sleek Embraer aircraft set the tone for a new era.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, who flagged off the airline, assured of federal backing and emphasised the need for professional management through a concession model, not privatisation. “Don’t let bureaucracy kill Enugu Air,” he warned.
Governor Mbah described the airline as a public asset designed for traders, students, investors, and everyday Ndi Enugu, not a luxury.
With routes connecting Enugu to Abuja and Lagos under a Golden Triangle plan, expansion into Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano and even international hubs is on the horizon.
Business leaders like Fidelity Bank CEO, Dr Nneka Onyeali‑Ikpe, and XEJet boss, Engr Ayuba Emmanuel, endorsed the project, alongside cultural icons and community heads.
The enthusiasm from the local and diaspora communities has been overwhelming.
Mazi Okwu Nnabuike of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council called it an “economic unlocker,” while Senator Osita Ngwu projected over 20,000 jobs across aviation, tourism, logistics, and more.
From real estate to smart infrastructure, ripple effects are already anticipated.
With approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and a strong public-private model in place, Enugu Air isn’t just flying—it’s elevating hope, trade, and regional pride.
