Residents Celebrate As Idemili North Clears 15-Year-Old Refuse Dumpsite In Obosi
Years of living with a towering refuse dumpsite, foul odour and health concerns have finally come to an end for residents of Owelle Aja in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a major clean-up by the local council.
The Idemili North Local Government Council, led by Mayor Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, deployed an excavator and four tipper trucks to evacuate the massive waste heap that had blocked MC King Lane for nearly 15 years.
Mayor Nkwoka blamed indiscriminate waste disposal for the environmental challenge, revealing that six major illegal dumpsites had been identified in the community.
He said previous efforts to clear the sites were hampered by poor access roads and low-hanging electricity poles, but collaboration with landlords made the operation possible.
He assured residents that all identified dumpsites would be cleared and announced plans to work with landlords and tenants to establish a sustainable waste disposal system.
He also warned that anyone caught dumping refuse illegally would face sanctions, including paying for waste evacuation or possible legal action.
Residents welcomed the intervention, describing it as long overdue.
They said the cleared dumpsite would improve public health, restore access to the street and enhance the community’s environment, while urging the council to sustain monitoring to prevent a return to indiscriminate dumping.
