TCN Rallies Ebonyi Communities Against Vandalism As Threats To Power Infrastructure Rise
As attacks on critical infrastructure continue to threaten Nigeria’s electricity network, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has intensified efforts to enlist host communities in protecting power installations across Ebonyi State.
The company on Thursday carried out a sensitisation campaign in Umuhuali, Ezillo and Nkalagu communities, warning residents against vandalism, illegal construction on transmission corridors and activities capable of endangering high-voltage power facilities.
Speaking during the exercise, General Manager (Transmission), Enugu Region, Dr Thomas Inugonum, stressed that vandalism of transmission towers and power lines not only disrupts electricity supply but also poses serious risks to lives and the national economy.
He urged residents to help safeguard TCN assets by reporting suspicious activities and preventing encroachment on the company’s Right of Way.
Dr Inugonum recalled a recent incident in Ezillo where a suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to tamper with a transmission tower.
He also commended local youths and security operatives in Ezza Umuhuali for arresting two suspects involved in dismantling components from transmission towers along the Nkalagu-Abakaliki 132kV line.
The TCN official noted that similar awareness campaigns in Benue and Enugu states had yielded positive results and expressed optimism that Ebonyi communities would demonstrate the same commitment.
Traditional ruler of Umuhuali Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Patrick Nwafor Udoku, pledged support for the protection of power infrastructure, while President General of Ezza Umuhuali Town Union, Hon Solomon Nweke, described attacks on electricity facilities as a direct assault on the nation’s economy and public safety.
Participants at the event pledged to work closely with TCN and security agencies to protect transmission facilities serving their communities and the country.
