TCN Takes Anti-Vandalism Campaign To Niger Community Amid Rising Attacks On Power Infrastructure
As attacks on Nigeria’s power infrastructure continue to threaten electricity supply, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has intensified efforts to curb vandalism through community engagement and public awareness.
TCN held an anti-vandalism sensitisation campaign in Lambata Community, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, urging residents to help protect transmission facilities and prevent activities capable of disrupting power supply.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager, Transmission, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, said the programme was organised in response to the alarming increase in vandalism of transmission installations across the country.
He noted that vandals often sell stolen components for insignificant sums, while their actions leave entire communities without electricity and undermine national development.
Shuaibu warned that prolonged power outages caused by vandalism could have serious consequences for hospitals and other essential services, adding that funds meant for expanding the transmission network are frequently diverted to replacing damaged infrastructure.
He also noted that vandalism sometimes results in the death of perpetrators through electrocution.
Representatives of security agencies at the event stressed the need for vigilance and collaboration.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) warned that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted, while the police urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities around transmission towers and power installations.
The District Head of Izom, Alhaji Ibrahim A. Salihu, called on community members to take ownership of transmission facilities, describing them as assets that belong to the people and must be protected for the collective good.
The campaign is part of TCN’s ongoing nationwide efforts to educate communities on the dangers and far-reaching consequences of vandalising electricity infrastructure while fostering local participation in safeguarding critical national assets.
The event attracted security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, road safety officials and members of the media.
