CLO Pushes ‘Operation Show Your Voter’s Card’ To Tackle South-East Voter Apathy
With voter apathy increasingly threatening democratic participation in the South-East, the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Anambra State Branch, has called on Governor Charles Soludo and other South-East governors to launch an aggressive campaign tagged “Operation Show Your Voter’s Card.”
The group said the initiative should be extended to markets, schools, ministries, churches and other public institutions to encourage citizens to actively participate in the electoral process ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued in Awka, the CLO lamented what it described as widespread disillusionment among citizens following the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, noting that many people had vowed never to vote again.
The statement, signed by CLO Anambra Chairman, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, and Comrade Vincent Udeh, warned that political indifference could further weaken democracy in the region.
According to the organisation, the South-East currently records the lowest number of registered voters among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with less than 20 per cent voter turnout in most elections.
The group stressed that only active participation in the democratic process can produce accountable leadership, urging eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and defend their votes.
CLO also appealed to the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, to ensure a seamless voter registration process and address bureaucratic bottlenecks affecting registrants.
The organisation further commended Justice Development and Peace/Caritas of the Archdiocese of Onitsha for its voter sensitisation efforts and urged other faith-based groups to emulate the initiative.
The group maintained that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in governance and hold leaders accountable.
