Women Must Lead, Not Watch” – NAWOJ FCT Takes Empowerment Drive To Abuja Market Women Ahead Of 2027

In a bold move to bridge the gap between advocacy and grassroots realities, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ FCT Chapter, has taken its campaign for women’s empowerment, health awareness, and political inclusion directly to market women in Abuja, urging them to become active players in shaping Nigeria’s future.

At a marketplace outreach held at Wuse Market in the FCT, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Aisha Ibrahim Bura, applauded NAWOJ FCT for engaging women at the grassroots level, describing the initiative as a practical step towards real empowerment where it matters most.

She encouraged women to prioritise their health, speak up against gender-based violence, and prepare to participate actively in the 2027 general elections.

According to her, women must no longer remain on the sidelines of leadership and governance.

Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang, said the outreach focused on vaccine awareness, reproductive health, women’s rights, and political participation, stressing that journalism must go beyond reporting to advocacy and impact.

Health experts at the event also addressed vaccine misconceptions and reproductive health issues.

Executive Director of Vaccine Network, Chika Offor, urged women to ensure their children receive proper immunisation, especially the HPV vaccine, while reproductive health expert Ejike Oji encouraged women to enrol in the 5 Million Women Database initiative aimed at improving access to healthcare, skills development, and economic opportunities.

The outreach also spotlighted women’s economic inclusion, with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council stressing the need for women to gain better access to Nigeria’s raw material value chains to drive national growth.

Many market women at the event praised the initiative, saying it had deepened their understanding of health, civic participation, and economic empowerment, while pledging to support credible leadership in future elections.
