NUJ Anambra Honours Veteran Sports Journalist Chigozie Chukwuleta For 30 Years Of Service
A career spanning more than three decades is rare in journalism, where the demands of the newsroom are relentless, and the industry keeps changing.
For veteran sports journalist and broadcaster Chigozie Patience Chukwuleta, that long commitment has now earned formal recognition.
Veteran broadcaster and sports journalist, Chigozie Patience Chukwuleta, has been honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, for more than three decades of professional service.
Chukwuleta, Deputy Station Manager of UNIZIK 94.1 FM, received the 2026 NUJ Long Term Professional Service Award on Thursday, September 10, during the council’s 35th anniversary celebration.
The award, signed by NUJ Anambra Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, and presented by the chairman of the occasion, Dr Churchill Okonkwo, recognised her sustained contribution to journalism, particularly sports reporting.
Chukwuleta began her journalism career with Concord Newspapers in 1991 before joining the Anambra State Newspapers and Printing Corporation, publishers of the National Light, where she worked until 2008. She joined Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2008 and became Deputy Station Manager of UNIZIK 94.1 FM in 2013.
Beyond newsroom and broadcasting duties, she has played a prominent role in sports journalism and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), serving as National Treasurer, National Financial Secretary and Vice-President, South-East, at different times.
Her reporting career has taken her to major continental and international sporting events, including the African Youth Championship, All Africa Games and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
She also participated in the FIFA/AFP Training for Female Sports Writers in Africa in Senegal in 2011.
Reacting to the recognition, Chukwuleta expressed gratitude to her family, colleagues, NUJ leadership, SWAN members, friends and well-wishers for their support throughout her career.
Reflecting on more than 30 years in journalism, she simply attributed the milestone to God: “It can only be God.”
