Easter Amid Hardship: Catholic Bishops Urge Nigerians Not To Lose Hope Despite Insecurity, Poor Leadership

In a nation grappling with deepening insecurity and economic strain, Nigeria’s Catholic bishops have delivered a powerful Easter message of resilience, urging citizens not to surrender to despair but to hold firmly to hope.

In the 2026 Easter message issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, its President, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, acknowledged the harsh realities confronting many Nigerians, from insurgency and kidnappings to economic hardship and loss, describing them as consequences of years of poor leadership marked by greed, nepotism, and disregard for the common good.

Drawing parallels with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the bishops emphasised that just as darkness gave way to light on Easter morning, Nigeria’s current struggles would not endure forever.

They encouraged citizens to remain steadfast, stressing that “the dawn is coming” and that hope must not be abandoned even in the face of adversity.

The message also turned attention to the forthcoming 2027 general elections, warning against voter apathy.

The bishops urged Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process by obtaining and verifying their voter cards, while also calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that elections are credible, transparent, and inclusive.

Addressing those burdened by grief, unemployment, displacement, and insecurity, the Church reassured Nigerians that their suffering is not unnoticed, affirming that the promise of resurrection offers a pathway to renewal and national restoration.

While acknowledging the depth of the country’s challenges, the bishops maintained a tone of cautious optimism, insisting that faith, responsible citizenship, and collective action remain critical to rebuilding Nigeria.

They concluded with a message of comfort and encouragement, praying for peace, justice, and a future where the nation rises above its present trials.
