Disu To FCT Journalists: Media Must Be Treated With Respect, Not Contempt

Trust between security agencies and the media often shapes how the public understands safety, accountability and governance.

That reality came into focus in Abuja on Saturday as the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, praised FCT journalists and called for deeper police-media collaboration.

Speaking at the Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, Disu commended journalists for keeping the public informed and contributing to national development.

He said journalists must be seen and treated as respected professionals, not beggars, stressing that the media remains a vital institution in society.

The police chief noted that his relationship with journalists has always been built on mutual respect and professionalism, and urged stronger cooperation between the police and the media to boost public trust and improve security communication.

Disu also charged both police officers and journalists to conduct themselves responsibly at all times, saying good conduct leaves lasting impressions in society.

In response, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, congratulated Disu on his appointment and described him as a longstanding friend of the press.

She expressed confidence in his leadership, pledged the council’s support in reporting security issues objectively, and disclosed that the IGP would be invited as a special guest to the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week.

Ike reaffirmed the council’s commitment to responsible journalism and to supporting initiatives that strengthen security and governance in the FCT.
