IWD 2026: NAWOJ FCT Demands Action On Women’s Rights, Announces Free Cancer Screening For Female Journalists

As conversations around gender equality grow louder globally, women journalists in Nigeria’s capital are insisting that the time for promises has passed — what is needed now is action that protects the rights and well-being of women and girls.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, made the call while commemorating the 2026 International Women’s Day, themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” with the campaign call #GiveToGain.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, the association said the theme underscores the urgent need for deliberate actions that guarantee equal opportunities, justice and inclusion for women across all sectors.

NAWOJ FCT noted that as journalists and advocates, the association remains committed to amplifying the voices of women, particularly those whose stories are often overlooked, while continuing to advocate for policies that promote equality, dignity and justice.

To strengthen the welfare of female journalists, the association revealed that it has partnered with the Federal Medical Centre and the Federal Ministry of Health to provide free cancer screening for female journalists in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that early detection remains key in the fight against cancer.

The association also disclosed that, in partnership with the German Embassy, two programmes are being implemented to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day.

These include a capacity-building programme for female journalists aimed at improving professional skills and leadership capacity, as well as a Marketplace Advocacy Event designed to engage grassroots women and promote awareness on issues affecting women and girls.

NAWOJ FCT further reaffirmed its commitment to advocating increased representation of women in governance, noting that it will continue working with NAWOJ National and other stakeholders to push for the actualisation of Special Seats for Women in Nigeria’s political system.

The association also commended female journalists in the FCT for their resilience, professionalism and dedication to telling stories that highlight societal challenges, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups.

NAWOJ FCT urged governments, institutions and stakeholders to intensify efforts towards ensuring equal rights, protection and opportunities for all women and girls.
