Cybercrime: Police Launch ‘Real Odogwu No Dey Hide Face’ Campaign To Promote Online Safety
As cybercrime becomes increasingly sophisticated and borderless, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a nationwide campaign to encourage safer online behaviour and protect citizens from digital threats.
The initiative, tagged “Real Odogwu No Dey Hide Face,” is a month-long online awareness drive spearheaded by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to strengthen digital security and promote responsible internet use among Nigerians.
Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Director of the NPF-NCCC, CP Ifeanyi Uche Henry, said the campaign was designed to educate the public on the growing dangers of cybercrime and the need for proactive digital vigilance.
He noted that cybercriminals increasingly exploit ignorance and poor online habits, warning that crimes such as identity theft, romance scams, business email compromise, sextortion and phishing are on the rise.
According to him, many attacks succeed simply because victims are unaware of basic cyber-safety practices.
The Director also issued a stern warning to those engaged in cybercrime, stating that the Centre’s Cyberhawk teams are deploying advanced digital tracking technologies to identify and prosecute offenders.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, commended the support of the UK National Crime Agency and the City of London Police, describing the partnership as crucial in combating cybercrime and securing digital spaces.
The Police advised Nigerians to remain cyber-aware by safeguarding sensitive information such as ATM PINs, OTPs and BVNs, using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and avoiding suspicious links or urgent messages designed to trick unsuspecting users.
The Force also urged individuals and organisations to protect personal and corporate data by relying on secure communication channels.
