Middle East Tensions: Police Warn Against Importing Foreign Conflicts Into Nigeria
As tensions escalate in parts of the Middle East with ripple effects across global security landscapes, the Nigeria Police Force has moved swiftly to reassure citizens that the country remains stable and firmly under control.
The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Olatunji Disu, on Saturday affirmed that Nigeria will not become a theatre for foreign ideological or sectarian conflicts, despite evolving geopolitical developments abroad.
In a directive to Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with particular focus on the North West, North East and North Central zones, the IGP ordered heightened surveillance, strengthened intelligence gathering and increased visibility policing around worship centres and other public spaces.
The police hierarchy has also intensified collaboration with traditional and religious leaders to prevent any attempt by individuals or groups to exploit international developments to incite unrest.
Force Public Relations Officer, Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the Nigeria Police remains resolute and fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, stressing that any attempt to import external tensions into Nigeria would be met with the full weight of the law.
Citizens have been urged to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while promptly reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
The reassurance comes amid growing global anxieties over Middle East hostilities, with security agencies keen to ensure that external conflicts do not inflame domestic fault lines.
