ECOWAS Marks 50 Years with Inclusion Drive For Blind Students In Senegal
In West Africa’s push for people-centred development, inclusion is no longer a slogan, it is showing up in classrooms where it matters most.
To mark its 50th anniversary, the ECOWAS Permanent Representation in Senegal donated pedagogical materials to the National Institute for the Education and Training of Blind Youth (INEFJA) in Thiès, reaffirming the regional bloc’s commitment to social inclusion and equal opportunity.
Backed by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), the support targets 160 resident students grappling with material shortages and nutritional challenges.
The intervention was delivered in partnership with educational authorities, health institutions, community organisations and university stakeholders, signalling a multi-sector approach to strengthening learning conditions for visually impaired learners.
Beyond the equipment handed over, ECOWAS framed the gesture as part of its wider vision of an “ECOWAS of the People”, where dignity, inclusive education and human capital development sit at the heart of regional integration and sustainable social progress.
For students at INEFJA, the donation offers more than tools for learning, it represents visibility, solidarity and a promise that regional development must leave no one behind.
