FG Issues One-Month Ultimatum Over Abandoned NHIA Office In Abeokuta
When public health infrastructure stalls, citizens pay the price in delayed access to care and weakened service delivery. That concern came into sharp focus on Thursday as the Federal Government moved to end years of inaction over the abandoned National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Following a viral social media video highlighting the poor state of the facility, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Kunle Salako, carried out an unscheduled on-the-spot inspection of the building.
Visibly concerned by its prolonged abandonment, the Minister said no public health asset should be left to waste, especially as Nigeria pushes reforms to expand access to affordable healthcare.
It was established that the contractor is yet to formally hand over the facility to NHIA management.
Dr Salako, therefore, issued a one-month ultimatum from 12 February 2026 for the contractor to fix outstanding works and make the office fully functional for staff occupation.
He assured stakeholders that the Federal Government would take necessary steps to ensure the facility is put to productive use within the timeline, in the overall interest of residents of Ogun State.
