Why NAWOJ FCT Is Taking Women’s Empowerment Talks Directly To Diplomats
When women in diplomacy and journalism align, policy conversations move closer to real impact.
That was the underlying message as the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, signalled its readiness to forge stronger partnerships with diplomatic missions to advance women’s empowerment and leadership in Nigeria.
The commitment was made at a luncheon hosted by the Ambassador of Finland to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, which brought together female ambassadors from Germany, Sweden, Botswana and Cuba and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT for dialogue and experience sharing.
Discussions at the meeting centred on women’s economic empowerment, political participation, climate resilience and the urgent need to address gender-based violence.
Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, described the association as a strong professional network of women journalists across print, broadcast and online media, playing a strategic role in connecting governments, development partners and citizens.
She highlighted NAWOJ’s grassroots advocacy and announced plans for expanded public engagement and capacity-building programmes, including training in mobile journalism and artificial intelligence, to strengthen women’s competitiveness and leadership in the digital space.
The ambassadors, in their remarks, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting women’s leadership and inclusive governance, noting that women’s representation in decision-making remains below global targets.
The engagement marked a practical step towards sustained collaboration between NAWOJ and the diplomatic community, aimed at amplifying the voices and opportunities of women and girls across Nigeria.
