Tinubu, Air Force Chief Seal Key Türkiye Deals To Boost Nigeria’s Air Power
As Nigeria intensifies efforts to modernise its military and confront evolving security threats, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken fresh steps to strengthen the country’s defence partnerships through a high-level visit to Türkiye.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, accompanied the President and the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, on the official working visit to Ankara, which began on 26 January 2026.
The trip, according to the Nigerian Air Force, is aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s strategic defence posture and accelerating access to advanced military technologies.
The visit produced nine Memoranda of Understanding between Nigeria and Türkiye, covering defence, trade, education, media and technology.
The agreements are expected to translate into practical cooperation, including skills transfer, institutional support and improved access to cutting-edge defence systems.
During the visit, the Air Force leadership toured major Turkish defence firms, including ASELSAN, Turkish Aerospace Industries and HAVELSAN, to review procurement programmes, maintenance support, training and research partnerships.
The engagements are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, precision strike and close air support capabilities.
Air Marshal Aneke said the visit would help deliver “smarter air power for safer communities,” stressing that the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to supporting ground forces and degrading threats such as terrorism, banditry and insurgency.
The Air Force says the renewed partnership is expected to translate into improved security, stronger operational effectiveness and long-term gains for national stability and development.
