Nigeria Steps Up Airpower As NAF Pushes Forward M-346 Fighter Programme In Italy

At a time when air superiority increasingly defines national security, Nigeria is moving decisively to modernise its combat fleet and sharpen its deterrence edge.

The Nigerian Air Force has recorded fresh progress in its fleet renewal drive following high-level engagements in Italy by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, on the M-346 fighter ground attack aircraft programme.

During meetings with Leonardo Aircraft Division in Milan, the CAS described the M-346 programme as a critical boost to Nigeria’s combat capability, noting that the platform will enhance precision strike operations, improve pilot training, and reinforce the country’s regional deterrence posture.

He stressed the importance of synchronising aircraft delivery with infrastructure readiness in Nigeria to ensure seamless induction into service.

Air Marshal Aneke also assessed Leonardo’s helicopter portfolio, commending the performance of platforms already in NAF service, including the AW-109 Trekker, which continues to support counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and internal security operations nationwide.

He emphasised that the timely delivery of aircraft, spares, and structured training packages remains vital to sustaining operational readiness.

Leonardo, on its part, reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria, pledging continued support for both the AW-109 and M-346 programmes, including training and long-term sustainment.

The NAF leadership assured Nigerians that ongoing investments in modern platforms and partnerships are geared towards building a more agile, responsive, and resilient Air Force capable of supporting joint operations and securing the nation.
