ECOWAS Backs Dialogue, Warns Against Breach Of Venezuela’s Sovereignty

Amid rising global tensions and renewed debates over state sovereignty, West Africa’s regional bloc has added its voice to growing international calls for restraint in Venezuela.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says it is closely monitoring recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, expressing concern over actions that could undermine international law and stability.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja, ECOWAS acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking.

However, it stressed that such efforts must not come at the expense of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations, principles firmly enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

The regional body aligned itself with the African Union’s statement of 3 January 2026, which urged all parties involved in Venezuela’s situation to exercise restraint and pursue inclusive dialogue.

Reaffirming its solidarity, ECOWAS said it stands with the people of Venezuela and supports their right to determine the future of their country through a peaceful and inclusive process.

It also called on all states to respect Venezuela’s independence and territorial integrity.

The statement reflects a broader African position favouring diplomacy over coercion in resolving internal and international disputes.
