New Year, New Lives: Anambra First Lady Welcomes State’s First Babies Of 2026
Few moments capture the promise of a new year more powerfully than the cry of a newborn, and in Anambra State, that promise was warmly celebrated.
The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, on New Year’s Day and the days that followed, welcomed the first babies born in the state in 2026 with visits to selected public hospitals.
The annual gesture marked the beginning of the year with hope, gratitude and renewed faith in the future.
Dr Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, presented gifts and cash support to the newborns and their mothers, while spending time sharing joyful moments, offering encouragement and prayers for the children’s healthy growth.
She expressed satisfaction with the impact of the state’s maternal healthcare interventions, citing testimonies from mothers who benefited from the government’s free antenatal and delivery services.
The programme, now in its third year, offers free antenatal care and delivery, including caesarean sections, in all public hospitals across Anambra State.
Describing the celebration of January 1 babies as both symbolic and spiritual, the First Lady said it represents thanksgiving, hope and a positive outlook for the year ahead.
“I was deeply moved by the heartwarming testimonies of mothers who received antenatal care and delivered their babies at no cost through our free maternal healthcare programme,” she said.
She thanked God for the gift of children and prayed that the newborns would grow into responsible citizens and future leaders of Anambra State.
