In a region where vigilance often makes the difference between safety and tragedy, sustained intelligence-led operations continue to deny terrorists room to regroup in Nigeria’s North-East.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have recovered a large cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State, further strengthening ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal and terrorist activities.
The discovery followed sustained troop presence and follow-up actions after a recent cordon-and-search operation, intensified in the wake of multiple suicide bombers neutralised or apprehended within the past week.
A statement by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said at about 3:00 p.m. on January 2, 2026, troops received a distress call from residents who reported suspicious metallic objects concealed inside a drainage channel.
Soldiers, working alongside Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, swiftly secured the area and carried out a detailed search.
The operation led to the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including live rounds, as well as power banks hidden in the drainage channel.
Safety measures were immediately taken, while efforts continue to drain the channel to confirm whether more dangerous items are present.
Security forces have maintained dominance of the area to prevent any attempt by criminals or terrorists to retrieve the recovered items.
No casualties were recorded, and the situation remains calm, with troops on heightened alert.
Military authorities praised community cooperation, stressing that timely information from residents remains critical to sustaining peace and security across the North-East.
