Military: Pressure On IPOB Weakens Insecurity Grip In Anambra
After months of tension and fear, signs are emerging that the security tide may be turning in Anambra State and across the South East.
The Nigerian military says insecurity in the region has dropped significantly, following intensified operations against separatist groups.
Speaking at the Defence Headquarters’ end-of-year media briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, disclosed that sustained, intelligence-led actions have weakened the activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.
According to him, recent court rulings against key figures, including IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and the jailing of Simon Ekpa in Finland, have substantially degraded the group’s operational capacity.
Major General Onoja revealed that troops uncovered tactics such as locally fabricated explosive devices and attacks on lightly manned checkpoints, prompting the deployment of additional personnel and equipment.
Under Operation Udo Ka in the South East, he said several fighters were neutralised, 324 suspects arrested, and 64 kidnapped victims rescued, alongside the recovery of arms and ammunition.
Nationwide, the military recorded the arrest of over 4,300 suspects, the surrender of more than 1,600 terrorists and their families, and the rescue of over 2,300 abducted persons.
On the Christmas Day joint operation with the United States, the military confirmed that several targeted terrorists were killed, with further details to be released after operational assessments.
The Defence Headquarters says it remains committed to sustaining the gains and restoring lasting peace across the region.
