SWAN Mourns Fallen Journalists, Consoles NTA, NUJ, Gombe, Anthony Joshua After Tragic Road Crashes

A dark cloud has again settled over Nigeria’s media and sports communities, reminding the nation of the fragile line between celebration and tragedy.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of seven journalists who lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Gombe State while returning from a colleague’s wedding.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, SWAN President, Mr Isaiah Benjamin, through the Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, described the loss as shocking and heartbreaking.

Benjamin condoled with the bereaved families, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Gombe State Government, praying for divine comfort for those left behind. He noted that losing seven journalists at once was a painful blow to the profession.

Four others injured in the crash along the Billiri-Kumo Road are currently receiving medical care.

In a related development, SWAN also commiserated with world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, over the death of two of his associates in a separate fatal accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The association described the incident as regrettable, while praying for Joshua’s speedy recovery from the injuries he sustained.

According to SWAN, Joshua’s life and career remain a source of inspiration to young people, even as he continues to make waves in global boxing following his recent high-profile victory over Jake Paul.
