Christmas: SWAN Calls For Hope, Unity, Backs Super Eagles For AFCON Glory
At a time when Nigerians are navigating economic and social pressures, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged citizens to draw strength from the enduring message of Christmas while rallying behind the Super Eagles at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Celebrating with Christians on Christmas Day, SWAN said the season goes beyond merriment, offering a powerful reminder of hope, sacrifice and unity as exemplified by Jesus Christ.
In a statement issued by the Secretary-General of the association, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, on behalf of the President, Mr Isaiah Benjamin, SWAN noted that Christmas provides an opportunity for sober reflection and renewed faith in better days ahead.
The SWAN President encouraged Nigerians to remain cheerful and resilient, stressing that present challenges are temporary and should not erode collective optimism.
He further called on Christians to embrace the spirit of sharing and inclusiveness, urging Nigerians to reach out to one another irrespective of tribe or religion, in line with the teachings of Christ.
Beyond the festive message, SWAN also threw its weight behind the Super Eagles, praying for a successful AFCON campaign and urging the team to remain focused on reclaiming continental glory.
President Benjamin said Nigerian football fans expect nothing less than victory, noting that lifting the AFCON trophy would provide much-needed relief following the team’s recent World Cup qualifying setback.
He also commended the Federal Government for fulfilling its AFCON commitments to the national team and praised the National Sports Commission for its visible impact on sports development, urging sustained support as the Super Eagles strive to deliver on the pitch.
