Christmas Homecoming Ends In Tragedy As Anambra Man Dies In Lagos High-Rise Fire
What was meant to be a season of reunion and joy turned into heartbreak when a Christmas homecoming ended in flames on Lagos Island.
An Anambra-born businessman, Obumneme, popularly known as Nzeakaibeya, has died following a devastating fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a 25-storey commercial building, on Christmas Eve.
The deceased had reportedly returned from China to celebrate the festive season with his family in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area.
Eyewitness accounts say Obumneme was trapped inside the building as the inferno spread rapidly.
After initially escaping with some goods, he allegedly re-entered the burning complex to salvage more items. Sadly, parts of the structure collapsed, cutting off his escape.
Heartbreaking voice notes and videos that circulated widely on social media reportedly captured his final moments, including desperate calls to his wife and pleas for help that came too late.
His death has triggered grief and anger online, with many Nigerians questioning the speed and effectiveness of the emergency response.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) stated that the fire started around 5:00pm on the fourth floor and continued to rage through the night.
Three additional bodies were recovered, eight people were rescued with injuries, and goods worth billions of naira were destroyed.
Back home in Umuoji, mourning has engulfed the community, as Obumneme is remembered as a hardworking and enterprising young man whose life was tragically cut short.
