From ‘No’ To New Beginnings: Tears Of Joy As Senator Umeh’s Scholar Returns To Say Thank You

Sometimes, a single act of compassion can quietly rewrite an entire future.

This truth came alive in an emotional moment as a young Nigerian graduate returned, not to ask for help, but to say thank you.

There were tears of joy as Mr Ikechukwu Igwenagu and his daughter, Ms Nkiruka Igwenagu, paid a heartfelt visit to Senator Victor Umeh, expressing deep gratitude for a scholarship that transformed her life through education.

Nkiruka, now a confident graduate of Architecture from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), visited under the platform of the Victor Umeh Education Foundation (VUMEF).

She formally presented her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, a milestone made possible by the senator’s long-standing support.

Recounting her journey, Nkiruka recalled how her dreams almost ended in 2015 during a scholarship selection exercise in Awka.

Selected through a ballot system, she picked a slip marked “NO” and broke down in tears, fearing she would lose her admission to the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, as her parents were already struggling to sponsor three other children in university.

Her distress drew the attention of Senator Umeh, who listened to her story and, moved by compassion, promised to sponsor her education up to the Master’s level — a promise he faithfully kept.

The scholarship saw her through her studies at Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Impressed by her academic performance, the senator further extended the support to cover her Bachelor’s degree at UNEC, where she graduated successfully in Architecture.

After graduation, Senator Umeh encouraged her to proceed immediately to postgraduate studies.

However, due to her NYSC call-up, Nkiruka opted to complete national service first, returning afterwards to formally present her discharge certificate and express appreciation.

The visit was marked by a symbolic parade of honour as she appeared in full NYSC uniform, drawing admiration and applause.

Special prayers were also offered for Senator Umeh and his wife, Lady Prisca Umeh, in recognition of what many described as rare compassion and commitment to human capital development.

According to reports, over 300 students have graduated through Senator Umeh’s scholarship scheme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, while more than 324 students are currently benefiting nationwide.

From a ballot marked “NO” to a life-changing “YES,” Nkiruka Igwenagu’s story stands as a powerful reminder that opportunity, when matched with kindness, can change destinies.
