Onwa Dezemba: How Masquerade Theatre Is Showcasing Anambra’s Soul To The World
Culture becomes most powerful when it moves from memory to the streets, and this Yuletide, Anambra State is doing exactly that—turning its cities into living theatres of history, identity and shared values.
Through the ‘Igba Mmanwu’ segment of the Onwa Dezemba festivities, Anambra has unveiled one of its most treasured cultural assets: masquerade performance as a language of philosophy, governance and communal life.
From Boxing Day to 28 December, major urban centres including Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia have come alive with elaborate displays that blend spectacle with meaning.
At the heart of the celebration is the iconic Ijele masquerade, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Towering and majestic, Ijele symbolises the unity of the ancestors, the living and the unborn, embodying Igbo values of inclusivity, moral authority and communal balance.
More than entertainment, it serves as a moving archive of Igbo civilisation, where artisans, leaders, animals and everyday life are woven into a single, awe-inspiring performance.
Beyond Ijele, Anambra’s streets echo with the rhythms of dozens of masquerade traditions, Agaba, Okwomma, Ulaga, Ajibuusu, Ekete, Okworocha, Ajo Ofia and many others, each with distinct costumes, drumbeats and dance patterns passed down through generations.
In communities such as Umuoji, where over 60 masquerades feature annually, the art form remains a proud marker of identity and social cohesion.
By placing masquerade theatre at the centre of Onwa Dezemba, the Soludo-led Solution Government is spotlighting a rarely projected dimension of Igbo heritage, one that fuses aesthetics with ethics, celebration with collective memory.
It is a reminder that culture, when preserved as a living practice, can educate, inspire and unite.
This season, to witness Igba Mmanwu is not merely to watch a performance, but to step into Anambra’s worldview, where tradition dances confidently into the future.
