Nigeria Pays Tribute As Angola Loses A Political Giant
Nigeria has joined Angola and the wider African continent in mourning the death of former Angolan Vice President and Prime Minister, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, describing him as a towering statesman whose legacy helped shape modern Angola.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Nigerian government said it received the news of his passing with profound sadness, noting that the late leader, fondly called “Nando” played a pivotal role during Angola’s liberation struggle and its post-independence political evolution.
Nigeria praised dos Santos’ long and distinguished career in public service, during which he served as Vice Minister, Minister, Prime Minister, Vice President and President of the National Assembly, steering Angola through some of its most critical moments.
The statement said Nigeria shares deeply in the grief of the Angolan people, describing the late statesman as not only a pillar of stability in Angola but also a respected voice across Southern Africa and the continent at large, committed to unity, reconciliation and development.
On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian government extended heartfelt condolences to Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the bereaved family and the people of Angola, praying for the peaceful repose of the late leader’s soul.
