International Migrants Day: Youth Voices Take Centre Stage In Push For Safer Migration In Nigeria
As migration pressures grow and digital risks deepen, young people are being called upon to shape safer and more humane migration pathways in Nigeria.
To mark International Migrants Day 2025, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in partnership with iLEAD Africa under the PROMIS Project, convened a Youth Conference and Interactive Dialogue on Safe Migration, bringing together young people, government institutions and UN agencies.
Discussions centred on safe and regular migration pathways, the dangers of online exploitation, and the human rights dimensions of migration, with participants stressing that migrants are first and foremost rights-holders.
Speakers emphasised that migration is not merely about movement, but about people, cultures and contributions, noting that when well managed, it strengthens communities and supports development.
Panellists warned of growing digital risks, including deceptive online recruitment and migrant smuggling networks, while highlighting lawful migration options available to young Nigerians.
They also underscored the importance of informed decision-making and community awareness in reducing irregular migration.
The event featured a screening of the documentary “Know Before You Go: The Dark Web of Migrant Smuggling in Nigeria,” which sparked further reflection on the realities many migrants face.
The dialogue concluded with a shared commitment to deepen youth engagement, amplify migrant voices and promote rights-based migration governance in Nigeria.
International Migrants Day is observed annually on 18 December to recognise the resilience, contributions and rights of migrants worldwide.
