Soludo Moves To End Market Chaos, Unveils Plan To Scrap Illegal Unions In Anambra

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has signalled a decisive shake-up of market administration in the state, vowing to restore order and end extortion in major trading centres.

During an inspection of the newly constructed Oduigbo Market at Ochanja, Fegge, in Onitsha South Local Government Area, Soludo announced plans to dissolve existing market leadership structures and abolish unregulated market unions operating outside the law.

Addressing protesting traders during the visit, the Governor said some market leaders had overstayed their tenure, noting that a caretaker committee would be inaugurated pending fresh elections.

Soludo explained that the government would first compile and authenticate a proper register of genuine traders before fixing a new election date, warning that disorder and lawlessness would no longer be tolerated in Anambra markets.

He also revealed plans to introduce a law that will unify market structures across the state and clearly define the roles of market unions, stressing that union leaders would no longer collect revenues on behalf of the government.

“All legitimate market dues will be paid directly into government accounts. Anyone collecting money from petty traders is a thief,” the Governor declared, adding that roads and walkways must be kept clear of trading activities.

Soludo further disclosed plans to expand the Oduigbo Market with additional structures, including a multi-storey complex to accommodate more traders, assuring residents that strict law and order would prevail in Anambra markets in the coming years.
