Vatican Receives Interim Report On Challenges Posed By Catholics In Polygamous Marriages

As the Catholic Church continues its most far-reaching internal reflection in decades, one issue, often spoken about quietly in mission territories, has now moved to the centre of global Catholic debate: how to pastorally accompany the growing number of Catholics involved in polygamous marriages without diluting long-held doctrine.

The Vatican has received an interim report addressing the pastoral and doctrinal complexities arising from Catholics, and those seeking to join the Church, who are in polygamous unions.

The subject, long considered sensitive, resurfaced prominently during the historic Synod launched by the late Pope Francis, where delegates openly examined topics ranging from the Church’s approach to LGBTQ+ persons to the question of women’s ordination.

In March 2024, these matters were handed to specialised study groups, whose preliminary findings were released this week.

Final submissions are due to Pope Leo XIV by 31 December.

Polygamy, deeply rooted in many African cultures, remains one of the most pressing challenges for the Church, which teaches that marriage is a lifelong union between one man and one woman.

African Bishops have repeatedly underscored that polygamy “remains a prevalent reality,” creating difficult pastoral dilemmas.

Discussions at the Synod revealed that the Church grapples both with catechumens who enter the faith already in polygamous families and with baptised Catholics who later choose polygamy.

Delegates called for a more compassionate, reflective approach, one capable of offering support and closeness while maintaining fidelity to Catholic teaching.

A 12-member commission led by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been studying the issue in depth.

The group recently presented its draft report to the Vatican, receiving what Cardinal Ambongo described as “encouraging feedback,” alongside recommendations for refinement.

The report seeks to outline pastoral pathways for welcoming those in polygamous unions, helping them feel part of the Christian community, and guiding them gradually towards monogamous marriage.

The draft was also reviewed earlier this year during a gathering of bishops and theologians in Rwanda, where participants urged the Church to prioritise accompaniment over judgment.

Sr Esther Lucas Jose Maria highlighted the growing number of people in polygamous homes requesting Baptism and other sacraments.

“We can’t oblige these people to change,” she said, calling on the Church to “open doors and accept them.”

Meanwhile, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith is preparing to release a new document on marriage before month’s end, a move expected to be closely linked to the Church’s evolving reflection on polygamy, particularly within the African context.
