NUJ Chair Warns: “Digital Abuse Is The New Frontline Of Violence Against Women

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Grace Ike, has urged Nigerians to confront both physical and online violence against women with renewed urgency, warning that digital abuse has become one of the fastest-growing forms of gender-based oppression.

Speaking as the world marks the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Ike said the campaign’s global theme: “End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” reflects a critical shift in how societies must understand and tackle abuse.

Ike revealed that she personally faced targeted gender-based harassment during the NUJ FCT’s 2024 election period, including intimidation, threats, and derogatory online attacks designed to silence her.

That experience, she said, exposed how gendered violence now cuts across physical, psychological, and digital spaces.

She stressed that violence against women and girls remains a grave human rights violation that damages health, dignity, and societal progress.

She called on all stakeholders, men, women, boys, and girls, to work together to dismantle harmful norms and protect women in homes, workplaces, and online spaces.

The NUJ FCT, she noted, is committed to promoting responsible and inclusive reporting that amplifies survivors’ voices, demands justice, and pushes for stronger laws, survivor support systems, and firm policies against digital violence.

Ike urged Nigerians to move “from awareness to action,” saying society must reject abuse, support victims, and collectively build an environment where dignity, equality, and safety are guaranteed both offline and online.
