ECOWAS Deepens Regional Trade Integration With SIGMAT Rollout In West Africa
In a major stride toward digitalising cross-border trade, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has brought together customs ICT and transit experts from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and Liberia to finalise preparations for the official launch of the Interconnected System for the Management of Goods in Transit (SIGMAT).
The two-day technical meeting, held in Monrovia ahead of the 31st October 2025 launch, aims to streamline the electronic exchange of customs data among the three Member States, a move expected to enhance trade efficiency, improve revenue collection, and strengthen regional connectivity.
Developed as a home-grown ECOWAS solution, SIGMAT facilitates the secure and transparent management of goods in transit, reducing delays and ensuring that customs administrations can monitor cargo movement in real time.
Speaking during the session, Mr Gabriel M. Kromah of the Liberia Revenue Authority commended the participating nations for their collaboration, while ECOWAS Resident Representative to Liberia, Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, described the initiative as a “transformative step toward ICT-driven trade facilitation” across West Africa.
Ambassador Nkrumah reaffirmed the ECOWAS Commission’s commitment to ensuring that all transit corridors in the region benefit from SIGMAT automation, noting that the project would make trade corridors more competitive and boost economic growth.
The deployment of SIGMAT between Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and Liberia marks a significant leap in ECOWAS’ digital integration agenda, paving the way for smoother and more secure trade within the subregion.
