Nigeria Dismisses US Claims Of Christian Genocide, Reaffirms Commitment To Religious Freedom
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected claims by former US President Donald Trump and the United States government alleging a “Christian genocide” in the country, describing them as misleading and inconsistent with Nigeria’s realities.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Ministry said the Federal Government remains firmly committed to protecting all citizens irrespective of faith, race, or creed, while continuing its fight against violent extremism across the West African and Sahel regions.
“We mourn all victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces as they continue to fight against vicious but cowardly foes,” the statement read, adding that Nigeria “will continue to defend all citizens” and uphold the values of faith, tolerance, diversity, and inclusion.
The government emphasised that Nigeria, like the United States, celebrates its diversity as a national strength rather than a fault line, stressing that it remains a “God-fearing country” that abides by the rules-based international order.
Reaffirming the longstanding diplomatic ties between both nations, the statement noted that Nigeria continues to view the United States as a close ally.
“The Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will maintain its laser focus and steadfast commitment to all partners who believe in genuine peace, stability, freedom, and democracy,” it added.
The Ministry’s response follows recent remarks by Donald Trump, who redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians, a move that has stirred diplomatic reactions and renewed debate on the nature of Nigeria’s security and religious challenges.
