Runsewe Urges Media To Drive Sports Governance, Partnership and Investment In Nigeria

When the media wields its power responsibly it does not just report stories, it shapes the future.

That was the central message from the president of the golf federation, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, who underscored the transformative power of the press in strengthening sports governance, fostering partnerships, and attracting investment into Nigeria’s sports sector.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Runsewe commended the association for its 60 years of steadfast commitment to sports development and responsible journalism.

He described the media as “critical and strategic to the stability and growth of every society,” adding that it serves as the watchdog that ensures accountability, transparency, and public awareness.

“The media sets the agenda for government and drives institutional development,” he said, stressing that it could equally foster national unity or trigger disintegration depending on how it is utilised.

Runsewe urged SWAN to rededicate itself to promoting transparency in sports governance through investigative reporting, agenda-setting, and advocacy for reforms.

He also emphasised the need for collaboration among key stakeholders, including athletes, federations, sponsors, and fans, to build a more vibrant sports ecosystem.

Highlighting the economic potential of the sports industry, Runsewe identified opportunities in sports infrastructure, academies, broadcasting, tourism, and e-sports.

He encouraged sports journalists to spotlight these opportunities through positive storytelling and digital engagement to attract both local and foreign investors.

“The media can be the bridge that connects passion with profit, and talent with opportunity,” he noted.

This, he said, prompted his decision to train sports journalists on accurate reporting of the golf federation and its activities.

The lecture, themed ‘Leveraging the Power of the Media: Strengthening Governance, Partnership and Investment in Nigeria Sports’, reinforced the pivotal role of journalists as catalysts for reform and progress in the nation’s sporting landscape.
