WHO Calls For Stronger Mental Health Systems In Emergencies
As the world marks World Mental Health Day 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) has urged Nigeria and other African nations to prioritise mental health support before, during, and after crises, stressing that access to services remains critical in times of catastrophe and emergency.
Speaking in Abuja at a press conference to commemorate the day, the WHO Nigeria Country Representative, Dr Pavel Ursu, represented by Dr Mary Dewan, Technical Officer for Noncommunicable Diseases, said this year’s theme, “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies” — underscores the urgent need to integrate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into all phases of emergency response.
“Emergencies, be they outbreaks, conflicts, or natural disasters disrupt lives, fracture communities, and leave lasting psychological scars,” Dr Ursu noted. “While nearly everyone affected experiences emotional distress, one in five will face a mental health condition requiring professional care.”
He praised the Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and his team for their leadership in strengthening mental health prevention and management, particularly through the National Mental Health Programme.
Highlighting WHO’s interventions, Dr Ursu said the organisation has supported the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and state governments in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe to integrate mental health services into primary and secondary healthcare.
This includes the renovation of the State Psychiatric Hospital in Maiduguri, training of healthcare workers, provision of psychotropic medicines, and development of the Borno State Mental Health Strategic Framework.
He called for increased investments and coordinated action to ensure mental health services are accessible, especially during emergencies.
“Let us continue to advocate for stronger, more resilient systems that deliver mental health support when it is most needed, offering hope, healing, and dignity to all communities,” he concluded.
