‘Find Sommie’s Killers’ – Family Demands Justice As ARISE News Pays Condolence Visit

The brutal killing of 29-year-old ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, has reignited national outrage over insecurity in Nigeria, as her grieving family urged the Federal Government and security agencies to swiftly bring her killers to justice.

During a condolence visit to the family home in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, senior executives of the ARISE Media Group described Sommie, as she was fondly called, as brilliant, principled and dedicated to journalism.

The young lawyer-turned-journalist was murdered in her Abuja residence on Monday, 29 September, during an armed robbery.

Speaking for the family, Engineer Obi Maduagwu described the killing as “senseless, cruel, and deeply painful,” stressing that only justice could ease the family’s sorrow.

Leading the ARISE delegation, Deputy Managing Director Bayo Awosemo, Director of News Sumner Sambo, and former NUJ President Chris Isiguzo, paid glowing tributes to the late broadcaster.

Isiguzo, visibly moved, recalled seeing her in the newsroom just hours before her death: “Her voice may be silent, but her legacy will endure.”

While her parents were too heartbroken to speak, the atmosphere at the Maduagwu residence reflected the shock and devastation her death has caused across Nigeria’s media community.

Born on 26 December 1995, Sommie studied law in Nigeria and the UK before pursuing journalism, where she became known for her insightful coverage of justice, gender equity, and social issues.

Her killing has once again stirred urgent calls for better protection of journalists and reforms in Nigeria’s security system.
