In Nigeria, articulated trucks have become a recurring nightmare on the highways, with countless lives lost to preventable crashes.

Now, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is stepping up efforts to change this narrative by striking a bold partnership with Dangote Cement Transport, one of the country’s largest fleet operators.

At a strategic meeting in Abuja, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, and Dangote’s Transport Chief, Mr Murillo Silva, mapped out measures to curb the crashes often linked to the company’s trucks.

These include mandatory training and retraining of drivers under the National Skills Qualification Framework, stricter vehicle maintenance schedules, and the installation of essential safety devices to reduce mechanical failures.

“This engagement is more than a response to recent incidents; it is a proactive step to ensure that lives are saved and confidence is restored on our highways,” Mohammed said, stressing the shared responsibility between regulators and fleet operators.

The FRSC chief urged other corporate organisations to emulate Dangote by opening their operations to safety reviews and adopting best practices.

He also highlighted ongoing nationwide interventions, from driver recertification to intensified enforcement and public enlightenment, aimed at instilling a lasting culture of safety.

With Nigeria’s roads still ranking among the most dangerous in Africa, the Corps believes collaborative action is the surest path to reducing crashes and saving lives.
