Kano Police Educate Scrap Dealers, Scavengers On Explosive Risks
Scrap dealers and scavengers in Kano are often the first to stumble upon dangerous materials hidden in waste — sometimes even explosive devices.
To reduce the risk of tragedy, the Kano State Police Command has concluded a three-day awareness campaign teaching them how to spot and respond to potential threats.
The sensitisation exercise, held between 9th and 11th September across Yankaba, Kwanar Ungogo, and Kofar Waika, was led by CSP Cyprian Dariya of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit on behalf of Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
Participants were urged to follow four simple rules when faced with suspicious items: do not move closer, step back, avoid touching, and immediately call Police EOD operatives.
The campaign stressed that quick reporting can prevent devastating accidents.
The National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria, Kano Chapter, hailed the initiative. Its Vice Chairman, Alhaji Salisu Haruna Abubakar, described it as a proactive step toward protecting lives in an industry where danger can easily go unnoticed.
Reassuring residents of the Command’s commitment to public safety, CP Bakori encouraged vigilance and provided dedicated emergency lines for reporting suspected explosives.
