21 Internet Fraudsters Convicted In Ibadan As EFCC Secures Jail Terms, Fines and Car Forfeitures
Twenty-one internet fraudsters have been convicted in Ibadan following prosecutions by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The convictions, secured before Federal and Oyo State High Courts, came after the fraudsters pleaded guilty to charges ranging from advance fee fraud and obtaining by false pretence to possession of fraudulent documents and impersonation.
Among those convicted were Waheed Hamid Aromose, Aliu Abayomi Victor, Ugbe Emmanuel Ukali, Ajewole Segun Abraham and Kolawole Oreoluwa Johnson.
Others include Adewale Bolaji Al-Ameen, who impersonated a fictitious American, “Joshua Smith”, to defraud a victim through Instagram.
Sentences handed down varied from fines to terms of imprisonment and community service. For instance, Adewale Adetola Adedotun and Sheriff Funso Oparinde received one-year jail terms with options of fine, while Adegbaro forfeited a Mercedes Benz GLK 2015 in addition to his sentence.
Vehicles including Toyota Camry models were also forfeited to the Federal Government as proceeds of crime.
The EFCC said the convictions underscored its commitment to tackling cybercrime and ensuring offenders face justice.
