CITM Counters ICAN, Calls For Unity Among Professional Bodies
The Chartered Institute of Treasury Management (CITM) has dismissed recent remarks by the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, on the alleged proliferation of professional bodies, describing them as divisive and contrary to the authority of the Nigerian Parliament.
In a statement signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Adedoyin Olumide, CITM congratulated ICAN on its 60th anniversary but rejected any suggestion that other professional bodies were inferior.
Olumide stressed that CITM was established by an Act of Parliament in 2021 with a clear mandate to strengthen Nigeria’s financial system through treasury management, covering liquidity, financial risk, and corporate finance.
“The issue of ‘proliferation’ undermines the sovereignty of the law. Our specialisation enhances expertise and drives economic efficiency in line with global practice,” he noted.
While highlighting that the mandates of ICAN and CITM are distinct but complementary, Olumide urged ICAN to embrace inclusivity.
He said developed economies thrive on collaboration among professional bodies, a model Nigeria should emulate.
“Instead of divisive rhetoric, we should explore partnership avenues. CITM remains open to synergy that serves Nigeria’s greater good,” he added.
